From the reference work"Some Colonial Mansions and
Those Who Lived in Them"
there is found this quote:

"Among the prominent families of the historic Old Dominion,
illustrious in colonial days for personal worth and talent, for their
distinguished social position, for the prestige that came from the
possession of high political office, and for the consideration that
attached to the ownership of large landed estates...
none took precedence over the Carters..."

Talk about first impressions!
Those vaulted ceilings for example, suspend this crystal chandelier
some fifteen feet overhead, lighting the way for amazed visitors.
It was a gas-burner imported from Paris in 1907,
though since then it has been wired for electricity.

The opposing twin staircases you see here lead to the West
and East wings of the second floor. The main stairs ahead will
take you deeper into the house.

Immediately to your left is the entrance to the private Dining Room,
and to your right is the Armory (the former Guest Parlor).
